Centre support for Volunteerism
“Volunteers are not just free labour; they are the lifeblood of charitable organisations.”
- Cummings v Zuill, Founder, The Centre on Philanthropy
From its inception The Centre has been committed to the support of volunteerism in Bermuda. Today that tradition continues through a number of important programmes and services.
Skills-Based Volunteering
Skills-Based Volunteering (SBV) is a strategic type of volunteering in which corporate employees are partnered with a nonprofit organisation to address a specific organisational challenge.
The critical element to Skills-Based Volunteering is that it is project based. Volunteers are engaged to address a specific and clearly identified project that has a timeline and measureable result. SBV also requires specific committments from the nonprofit and the capacity to meet that committment.

Volunteer.bm
VOLUNTEER.bm is the online one-stop shop for volunteering in Bermuda. The interactive website provides nonprofit organisations with an online resource to recruit and manage volunteers and allows individuals to search for activities which suit their skills, experience and schedule.
Companies are also able to track staff volunteering hours through Team Tracker; a key component of The Centre’s ENGAGE programme. Staff members can log their volunteering hours under their organisation, allowing companies to track and report on employee engagement. Tracking volunteer contributions is a great way to foster team spirit and enhance volunteerism in the community.

Community Days
Through our ENGAGE programme we support corporate members with their volunteering programmes. Along with ongoing resources and support, The Centre offers facilitated Community Days, enabling a company’s employees to volunteer in a day of service to the community.
Nonprofit members are invited to submit projects which are suitable for a group of volunteers, to work as a team, and that must be achievable within one day (or half day). Examples of past projects include assisting The Salvation Army with their Christmas hamper appeal, by sorting toys, packing hampers, and helping to coordinate their collection. On another occasion, corporate volunteers spent time with residents of seniors’ homes for an afternoon of social activities such as games, reading, music and afternoon tea.
We can also offer custom Community Days for our corporate members that are categorised by their annual membership fee of $2500 and over.
Volunteer Recognition Reception
December 5th is National Volunteer Day and The Centre marks the occasion annually by hosting the Volunteer Recognition Reception. This reception allows nonprofit members of The Centre to each nominate one adult and one youth “outstanding volunteer for the year” and honour their contributions through an awards ceremony and cocktail reception.
Immigration Policy for Non-Bermudian residents of the Island
Non-Bermudian residents are in most cases permitted to volunteer in Bermuda without permission from the Department of Immigration.
