It is important to have the right committee members or board members - those that have a passion for contributing to the Third Sector in Bermuda and have some knowledge of the charities, projects and social issues facing the island. Diversity is very important. Some companies chose employee members representing different departments, age ranges and levels of seniority within the company. Some Foundation Boards also tend to engage external members (non-employees) to add diversity to their Boards.

The first step to determine the appropriate Board or committee composition is to outline the skills and attributes needed. For example, do you need an accountant on the team who can accurately interpret the financial statements that are submitted with the charity applications? Do you need a mother with school age children on your committee as the committee focus is on education? Specifying the composition of your committee or Board before you recruit your members is a useful exercise.
